Considering Eland's second birthday is less than two months away, I decided that I need to finally post his first birthday photos. Poor guy. There was just no demand to have them up since with the exception of Aunt Jenni, Uncle Matt, cousin Haylee, and Uncle Paul, all of our immediate family was at his party. Interestingly enough, Eland's first birthday party is the only birthday party that either of our boys have ever had where the majority of our family attended, and it was a fantastic event!
The Theme: Super Mario Brothers
When Eland was little we used to call him Meatball. Well, honestly just once or twice, but we quickly decided that this wasn't a nickname that we wanted to perpetuate. Anyway, when coming up with a theme for Eland's party, I kept coming back to Meatball, and when I told Dan this he immediately stated that a meatball party was the only thing he would agree on because he loved it so much. Still, not wanting to go too overboard with the meatball thing, I started thinking Italian (of which Eland is one-eighth), and eventually landed on the Super Mario Brothers, Mario and Luigi, which is perfect because Auggie could have a part to play, too.
Eland and Auggie both got overalls, because I already had a red pair for Eland. I sewed a green pair for Auggie, which he was thrilled about--although he insisted on not being called Luigi. Ah well. :) Eland's overalls had an E on them, and Auggie's had an A.
The Invitation
Notice that I changed all the initials on Mario and Luigi.
The Cake
Coming up with a design for the cake was a ton of fun. Dan's mom, Donna, a creative extraordinaire, helped me come up with the design and technique.

| "I want that one, and that one, and that one! Ooo! And that one too!" |
Family Pictures
So cool that we can actually have pictures of family on a birthday!
| Eland's nuclear family... |
| Plus Gram and Gramps! |
Plus Nana and Papa!
This was from before we left Grayslake. I don't have a good one with Zack and Donna and the boys in costume. |
| Uncle Dave and Eland |
| Uncle Dave, Aunt Elisabeth, and cousin Andrew still hiding in the womb! |
| Princess Daisy, AKA Anna Grace, with Luigi, AKA Auggie |
| Nana and her Mario Brothers |
| "I thought I was supposed to get cake!" |
| Aunt Alisa, Anna Grace, and Gram |
| Auggie getting some serious play-time in |
| I only wish I had a picture of my dad holding this wooden meatball spoon--it's huge! He had a friend make some serious Italian meatballs for meatball sandwiches. They were delish! |
| Because we were having a baby shower for Elisabeth the next day, Aunt Elaine was in town... |
| As was Aunt Diane and Aunt Karen! |
| Getting some beanbag practice in before college.. |
| Oh yeah! |
| "Seriously, when's the cake coming?" |
| Princess Daisy working on beanbags! |
| Anna Grace with her Mama! |
Cake, Finally!
| "Let me try some plastic ball first." |
| Paparazzi, check. |
| "What's this yellow thing?" |
| "Hmmm.." |
| "I think I like it!" |
| "I think I love it!" |
| Auggie got away with eating quite a few mushroom cupcakes while the paparazzi was focusing on Eland. |
| "Yes, so very good!" |
| "I think there's still some frosting left." |
| "Who needs this thing?" |
| "Did I get any on my face?" |
The Presents
I'm only including two photos, as you can get the idea. :)
I am thoroughly enjoying going through Eland's first birthday photos again. We all had such a great time celebrating our big One Year Old (who's about to turn two)!
