Back Your Boytjies!

Last Monday we went to our first Maties rugby game, and let me tell you folks, it was wild! We had such a great time, and the boys loved it, too. Yes, I'll admit that we have no idea what is going on, but it's great fun watching all these dudes who are so burly that could have been the cast for one of those movies like Troy or 300 run around after the ball. Thankfully my cousin Mike who played rugby in college clued us in to the workings of rugby via Facebook so that when we went to the game tonight we knew that a "touchdown" is really called a "try". Thanks, Mike!! Anyways, it was a blast! I'll have to post the pictures from tonight another time. These are from last week on my iPhone.

There are mountains in the background and all these very "African" looking trees. (We have pictures of the mountains in our photos from today.)
Spectators!
We had a hard time not cheering ILL-INI. Eventually we'll learn the butt-swag and cheer everyone does when the Maties score.
Dad, instead of hot dogs they sell smoked sausages that might be 2-feet-long! I think you belong here! ;)

I should probably explain the "Back Your Boytjies!" thing, although I'm not sure I can. Google Translate translates "boytjies" in Afrikans as "boytjies" in English. Go figure. I think it means Back Your Boys, and it's all over every Maties Rugby T-shirt.

Btw, Maties is pronounced mahhh-tees. Dan and I got such a kick out of having a university mascot be a "matie" (think "arrrr, matey!") before we moved here since that's another word for friend. Hardly intimidating, but the students at Stellenbosch don't seem to mind.
