About two weeks ago we were awoken in the middle of the night to a loud bump and subsequent crying. Auggie had fallen out of his bed for the first time ever. I turned on the light in the hall, picked him up, and gave him a big hug. About 60 seconds later I noticed that his face was wet--his nose was bleeding profusely! I immediately called to Dan to bring a towel and help me clean up.
Dan came quickly, Auggie calmed down a bit, and once the light was on and I saw all the blood, my cheeks went cold, my stomach turned, my head went fuzzy, and I felt like I was going to pass out. Having aspired once upon a time to be a doctor, I pride myself in being able to deal well with blood. Not tonight! I apparently don't do so well when it's blood at midnight. I got down on the floor, still comforting Auggie, and did my best to breathe slowly and deeply, and to not puke. Dan was the true hero as he nursed both Auggie and me, and cleaned up the mess in the meantime.
Perhaps we should have known that this was coming. Here is Auggie just two nights before:
And the solution? Mattress on the floor!
