Now that we've been living in South Africa for just about five months, I've realized that South Africa is largely independent when it comes to manufacturing. Sure, it's globally connected, but just about anything you could ever need is manufactured right here.
Nearly every food product is made in South Africa: cheeses and meats, obviously, but even Heinz Ketchup and Kellogg's Corn Flakes are made here. Btw, what does the Heinz bottle say on the top in America? Just curious, because here it's "World's Favourite" but now that I'm much more aware of how ego-centric the US is, I'm guessing it's "America's Favorite" back home. Just saying.
Clothes, paper products, binders, glassware, sheets, furniture... Sure you get the occasional Made in China, and even the rare Made in USA, but for the most part, I'm pretty sure South Africa could still exist and function in a relatively normal way even if the rest of the world didn't exist.
Food for thought, I suspect that South Africa can manufacture so many things because of the immense population of very poor people.
Food for thought, No. 2: Did you know that Bumbo chairs are made in South Africa?
